Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941 - 1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that include the deck log of the USS Trippe (FF-1075) for 1979 through 1980. For access to and/or copies of these logs, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
We also searched Combined Military Service Digital Photographic Files in the Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Record Group 330) and located 54 results for "USS Trippe" and 319 results results for "Unitas XX." These records have been digitized and can be viewed online through the Catalog.
In addition, we searched Moving Images Relating to Military Activities, ca. 1947 - 1980 in the General Records of the Department of the Navy (Record Group 428) and located a film entitled Unitas XX that includes a scene with the USS Trippe. For access to and/or copies of this film, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Motion Pictures via email at mopix@nara.gov.We also located a photograph of the USS Trippe during Unitas XX in the collections of the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC). Command Operations Reports for that time period are in NHHC custody. To request a specific report, contact NHHC via email at archives@navy.mil.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
