Dear Ms. Wolfe-Maddox,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you begin your research by requesting his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and medical records of enlisted men of the U.S. Navy who were separated from the service after 1885 and prior to 1958 are located at NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. To request these records, please mail a completed GSA Standard Form 180 to NPRC. You can also fax the form to 314-801-9195. Veterans and their next of kin can also use eVetRecs to request records. See eVetRecs Help for instructions. You can also view the record by visiting the NPRC Archival Research Room in St. Louis, MO. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Muster Rolls of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Other Naval Activities, 1/1/1939 - 1/1/1949 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that includes listings for David Lyle Van Arsdale (sometimes written as VanArsdale) of Louisville, Kentucky, that may be a match for your father. He has the service number 634-91-41. He is listed on the muster rolls for the PC-1263 from July 1943 through January 1944, and on the muster rolls of PC-567 from March 1944 through September 1945. The September 1945 muster roll lists his rating as of that date as SM2c(T), which translates to Signal Man, 2nd Class (Temporary).
As part of our on-going commitment to preserve our records, the National Archives has entered into partnership with Ancestry.com to digitize some of NARA's holdings. Digitized records include Muster Rolls/Personnel Diaries (crew rosters) of U.S. Naval Ships and Stations for the dates of January 1,1941 thru January 1, 1949. These records are now available in digital form and can be viewed online via http://www.ancestry.com. There may be a fee for this service. Instead, you may view these records online at one of NARA's facilities for free via a NARA PC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at http://www.archives.gov/locations/. Additionally, you may check with your local public or university library as these institutions often provide access to Ancestry.com.
We also searched the Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File, 1850-2010, and located a listing that may be a match for your father. The BIRLS Death File is also available on Ancestry.
