Seeking BIA letter stating Wintu Indian Tribe part of Pitt River Indian Tribe

    Betty Bird Newbie

I am seeking a copy of a letter from BIA written to the Wintu Indian Tribe of California in 1955 stating that "from this date forward, the Wintu Indian Tribe is considered part of Pitt River Indian Tribe of California."

          Dear Ms Bird,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

There is a band of the Wintun that are federally recognized and administered out of the Northern California Agency of the BIA. Also, there are bands of Wintun that appear in several other reservations and some not federally recognized. This is even more true for the Pit River tribal bands, found on several rancherias and mixed with other tribes. Today these are largely grouped together and administered again by the Northern California Agency.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located 4 series pertaining to census rolls of the Northern California Agency during 1948 - 1955 in the Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (Record Group 75). For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at San Francisco (RW-SB) via email at sanbruno.archives@nara.gov.

We also located two series titled Numerical Index to the Central Classified Files, 1943 - 1958 and the Central Classified Files, 1940 - 1957 in Records Group 75 that may include the letter you seek. For access to these series, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
