Dear Mr. Shiffer,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General’s Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) and located 2 Files for a George Shiffer. Neither are for George Edward Shiffer from Ohio.
We also searched the series Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in Record Group 94 but were unable to locate a file unit for George E. Shiffer or George Edward Shiffer. Most of the service records in this series have been made available via microfilm and through digitization of the microfilm. Unfortunately, the records for Ohio Volunteers have not been microfilmed or digitized. Please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov and ask RDT1 to search for him in the records for Ohio.
We also searched Ancestry and located All Civil War Military Results for George Edward Shiffer. There may be a fee for using Ancestry to access digitized records. However, you may view these records online at one of NARA's facilities for free via a NARA PC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at https://www.archives.gov/locations/.
You may wish to review Ohio State Archives; Ohio Civil War Roster; and Ohio Archives and Libraries Genealogy for more information and/or resources.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
