Dear Mr. Pasternak,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a series titled Command Chronologies and Related Documentation, 4/1962 - 6/1987 in the Records of the U.S. Marine Corps (Record Group 127) that includes many Command Chronology Reports of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment that list the number of individual and unit awards for the preceding month. There is not a name index to these records.
We also located the series titled Awards Citations Files, 1941 - 1970 in the General Records of the Department of the Navy (Record Group 428) but were unable to locate any individual awards for you. For additional assistance with individual awards and decorations, please write to the National Personnel Record Center (NPRC), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138. NPRC will provide the Military Awards Branch (MMMA), Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps with the records necessary to determine your eligibility for an award. In case of a problem, please contact MMMA directly by writing to Commandant of the Marine Corps Military Awards Branch (MMMA), 2008 Elliot Road, Quantico, VA 22134.
We searched the The Marine Corps Unit Awards Manual and found a Navy Unit Citation for the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment from 3 March 1970 to 24 March 1971. For further information on unit awards of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, please call (703) 432-4874 or write to the Historical Reference Branch, Marine Corps History Division, 3079 Moreell Avenue, Quantico, VA 22134. Please provide the lowest level echelon known (i.e., Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines) when making your request.
We hope this is helpful!
