          Dear Mr. Schneider,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the World War II Operations Reports, 1940-1948 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917-1981 (Record Group 407) and located general orders for 2 December 1945 to 31 December 1945 of the 96th Infantry Division. For access to and/or copies of these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.

We also searched the records in Record Group 407 and the Unit Histories, 1943 - 1967 in the Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter) ( Record Group 338) but were unable to locate general orders of the 382nd Infantry Regiment for December 1945 & January 1946 or general orders of the 96th Infantry Division for January 1946.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Were the Regimental records for all WWII units for this time period destroyed according to a schedule for that time frame, just like the Army rosters were destroyed for 1944-1945. I have the 96th INF General Orders. But seeking the elusive 382nd Regiment of the 96th Division Orders. Any additional help would prove helpful. Is it possible they are at NPRC at the Organizational Records Department? Thanks

                  Dear Mr. Schneider,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series titled Processing Work Sheets of the Departmental Records Branch (DRB) in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917-1981 (Record Group 407) that included the processing worksheets of the 382nd Infantry Regiment. The worksheets indicate that no general orders for the 382nd Infantry Regiment were received by the Historical Section of the DRB. The non-personnel related permanent records listed on the worksheets become the series titles World War II Operations Reports, 1940-1948 in Record Group 407.

The unit’s general orders would not be sent to the NPRC since the original OMPFs would have included special orders indicating the awards an individual received.

                  We hope this is helpful.
