Dear Ms. Budden,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a series tilted Lists of Records of Military Organizations Used to Create Volunteer Compiled Military Service Records in the Records of the Adjutant General’s Office (Record Group 94). The records are not yet digitized and available in the Catalog. For access to and/or copies, please contact the National Archives at Washington - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at email@example.com and inquire about all soldiers with the surname Buffler.
We suggest that you search Ancestry (a NARA digitization partner) after you obtain information from RDT1. You may access digitized information about the Buffler family in Federal census records; military records; and state and/or locally-created vital records. There may be a fee for using Ancestry to access digitized records. However, you may view these records online at one of NARA's facilities for free via a NARA PC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at https://www.archives.gov/locations/.
Also, we suggest that you review NARA’s website Start Your Genealogy Research for additional resources to expand your research. Plus, review Fort Lyon and Fort McDermit for background information about these military installations.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
