Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Official reports and other publications regarding the decennial population census can be found on the website of the U.S. Census Bureau's web page Publications: Census of Population and Housing. While the exact contents of these reports vary by year, they do provide statistical information to include the total population of each state, as well as the total population of counties, towns and other subdivisions. However, the only official tabulations we could find regarding surnames are lists of frequently occurring surnames from the 2010, 2000 and 1990 censuses. The data is not broken down by locality.
We searched online and could not locate a free website that provides counts of the total number of occurrences of a surname in a given area. There may be genealogical websites that provide this service to their subscribers.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Re: Seeking Census Summaries
Steven Robinson Jan 16, 2020 9:43 AM (in response to Steven Robinson)What about for historic Censuses? Since the entries seem to be searchable on various archive sites, I wondered if that meant there is a central database that is used for these queries, and if every anyone queried the database to create summaries per region and surname?

Dear Mr. Robinson,
Thank you for posting your follow-up request on History Hub!
We are unaware of a central database used for queries. For any additional questions about census data gathering and summaries, please contact the Census Bureau.
