Seeking Route for passenger ships from Australia to USA

Searching for my gg grandfather’s emigration from Victoria, Australia to America around 1873. What would be the customary point of entry for passenger ships traveling from Victoria to USA in 1873?

          Dear Ms. Hilts,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We suggest that you begin by searching the outbound passengers at the Victoria Public Records Office. The National Archives (NARA) has custody of passenger arrival records from many ports of entry for the 1870s. Many of NARA’s passenger arrival lists have been digitized and are available online. Please keep an open mind about the U.S. ports of arrival because the “common” US ports may not be where your great-great grandfather came into the United States.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
