Dear Mr. Wade,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
NRS, Portland, Oregon refers to Naval Recruiting Station, Portland, Oregon. When searching the indexes to the muster rolls for shore establishments, please use “Recruiting Station” instead of “Naval Recruting Station.” We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a record series titled Index to Muster Rolls, 1939 - 1975 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that included a file unit titled Recruiting Station, Fargo, North Dakota to Tar Reserve Training Center Kenosha, Wisconsin. Images 85 through 88 include listings for the recruiting station in Portland Oregon.
We also searched Indexes of Activity Numbers for Muster Rolls and Personnel Diaries, 1949 - 6/30/1975 also in Record Group 24. This series is arranged by year. As an example, we pulled up the Activity Number Index 1959. This index is arranged in two parts, with the first part being an alphabetical listing of ships and the second part being a listing of shore establishments arranged alphabetically by type of shore establishment. “NRS Portland Ore” is listed on image 136 under the “Recruiting Stations” heading. The activity number is 5465 0712 00.
The muster rolls for this recruiting station are in Muster Rolls of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Other Naval Activities, 1/1/1939 - 1/1/1949 and Muster Rolls and Personnel Diaries of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Other Naval Activities, 1/1/1949 - 12/31/1971. For access to and/or copies of these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. When contacting RDT2, please be as specific as possible about what dates you need, and provide any relevant information such as microfilm numbers. For muster rolls dated 1949 and latter, please provide the activity number as well.
Copies of the muster rolls for 1939 through 1949 have been digitized and are available through Ancestry.com as the data collection U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls, 1938-1949. The muster rolls are listed as Recruiting Station, Portland, OR. 1/31/39 to 1/1/49 Part 1 and Recruiting Station, Portland, OR. 1/31/39 to 1/1/49 Part 2. There may be a fee for this service. Instead, you may view these records online at one of NARA's facilities for free via a NARA PC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at http://www.archives.gov/locations/. Additionally, you may check with your local public or university library as these institutions often provide access to Ancestry.com
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
