I don't know exactly what is or is not available. The best way to find out is to contact your local VA office to inquire about federal benefits, as well as your state's veteran services agency to inquire about any state benefits. There are also organizations such as the American Red Cross that have specialists who assist veterans and their survivors understand and access any available benefits. Please see the following web pages for more information.
I would also recommend contacting the Alzheimers Association or a similar organization as they may be able to provide some advice and support for families of Alzheimer's patients.
My father, whose parents both suffered from Alzeheimers, speaks highly of the book "The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzeheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss" by Nancy L. Mace, MA and Peter V. Rabins, MD, MPH. It doesn't speak to your question about benefits, but does provide valuable insight into other issues.
