Dear Mr. Cantley,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) was the predecessor to the Work Projects Administration and assisted farmers with various programs. Records of FERA programs may be found in Records of the Work Projects Administration (Record Group 69). After the establishment of the WPA, assistance to farmers was moved to the Resettlement Administration, Farm Ownership Division, and other organizations that were part of the Farmers Home Administration. Records of these organizations are in Records of the Farmers Home Administration (Record Group 96).
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a series titled Farm Ownership Files, 1938 - 1946 in the Records of the Farmers Home Administration (Record Group 96). For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at Atlanta (RE-AT) via email at email@example.com.
The staff of the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) will be pleased to make the finding aids to the FERA and WPA records available to you or your representative in the Textual Research Room located 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD, near the University of Maryland--College Park campus. The Textual Research Room (Room 2000) hours are 8:45 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, except legal holidays. The RDT2 consultation room hours are 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except legal holidays. No appointment is necessary. Prior to your visit, please consult College Park websites at https://www.archives.gov/dc-metro/college-park/, https://www.archives.gov/dc-metro/self-service-copying.html, and https://www.archives.gov/research/start/getting-started.pdf.
We searched online and located the Final Report on the WPA Program, 1935-43 but were unable to locate references to building and selling farms. However, we did locate references to programs that placed qualified workers in farm-related jobs. We also located A Report of Federal Government’s Assistance to Agriculture as of July 185, 1935.
To access real estate records for Chicot County, Arkansas, contact the Chicot County Circuit Court.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
Thank you for this information. I had an uncle that bought one of these farms, I know of two different projects in Chicot county. I haven't found any records as to how they came about. When I have time will look into the information you provided.
