Dear Mr. Rafflenbeul,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched that National Archives Catalog and located Personnel Record Books of the Confederate Medical Director at Richmond, Virginia, Reference Files Relating to Confederate Medical Officers, and Records of Confederate Medical Officers From Virginia in the War Department Collection of Confederate Records (Record Group 109). For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We also located Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Confederate Organizations in Record Group 109 which includes records about individual Confederate soldiers based on information abstracted from Union prison and parole records and from captured and other surviving Confederate records. This series is indexed by General Index to Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers. Portions of both series have been digitized and can be viewed online through the Catalog by clicking on the blue “Search within this series” button. To order copies of the record of specific soldiers, please place your order online using eservices.archives.gov. For more information, please see Requesting Copies of Older (pre-WWI) Military Service Records.
The Carded Records are also available through NARA’s digitization partnership with Fold3. There may be a fee for accessing these records via Fold3. However, Fold3 may be accessed for free at any National Archives location. Some public and university libraries also offer free access to their patrons.
Please review the article Confederate Medical Personnel for more information about researching this topic.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
