Should any notation be made for a drawing/illustration?

The guidelines say not to describe visual elements, but if one is integrated into a sentence, should it be notated it somehow?  For example in the letters I'm transcribing, there is often a sentence like this:

Most of the houses looked like this:, but the one we were approaching had an archway , like this.

This is what I have been doing:

Most of the houses looked like this:[drawing], but the one we were approaching had an archway [drawing], like this.

Is that ok, or should I omit the [drawing] notation altogether, making it look like this:

Most of the houses looked like this:, but the one we were approaching had an archway, like this.

      Thanks,

      Margaret
