Seeking  information on Nathan Hale Volunteers (WWI)

I'm seeking information/documents on this group.  They were apparently a volunteer civilian group that existed prior to the U.S. entry into World War I (and perhaps after) that claimed to work with Army intelligence to keep tabs on (or spy on) people or organizations that were not in accord with American preparedness.  They may have been headquartered in Berkeley, California and most of their work may have been on the west coast but that is uncertain.  Who were these people?  Who were the group's leaders?  Under what guise did they work for or with the Army?  What did they accomplish?  What happened to them?
