Dear Mr. Rodrigues,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
There have been only two U.S. Navy ships by that name in the latter half of the 20th century. Neither were battleships, neither changed names, and neither were in existence in May 1979. USS Wasp (CV-18) was an aircraft carrier and was commissioned on 24 November 1943. It was decommissioned in 1972 and scrapped in 1973. For more information about this ship, see the article about it in the Dictionary of Naval Fighting Ships. The USS Wasp (LHD-1) is an amphibious assault ship was laid down in 30 May 1985, launched 4 August 1987, and commissioned 29 July 1989. It is still in service. For more information about the ship, see it’s official web page.
We hope this information is helpful.
