Dear Ms. Wells,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located 3 series titled Correspondence and Related Records Concerning Land Grant Railroad, Wagon Road, and Canal Companies, 1829-1939; Record Copies of Clear Lists for Canals in Illinois and Indiana, 1/5/1830-4/1/1848; and Lists of Wabash and Erie Canal Land Selections, 1838-1850 for possible transportation along the Erie Canal that your ancestors may have used. The records are not yet digitized and available in the Catalog. For access to and/or copies, please contact the National Archives at Washington - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
You may wish to review the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History - Transportation before 1876; and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s - A Journey Through American Transportation: 1776-2016 for background information.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
