What information is contained in War of 1812 service records?

I have located approximately 3 different matches to my ancestor who is to have served as a volunteer in the War of 1812 Virginia Militia.  I have the application submitted by his widow for his war pension.  He died in 1844 and she filed in 1879.  It was ultimately rejected because they couldn't match some service specifics to the muster rolls.  As the service index cards are available in FamilySearch.org, I'd appreciate knowing what more I'd be getting for my money?  I already paid the $30 for the pension application, only to find it included in Fold3 with my Ancestry subscription.
