Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog for any records related to your inquiry in the Records of the Selective Service System (Record Group 147). The search results can be found here.
Also, more information on classifications can be found on Selective Service System’s website. In addition, we suggest reviewing Selective Service manuals scanned and available online at the Hathi Trust Digital Library.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

joan stachnik Sep 23, 2019 3:23 PM (in response to Sylvia Naylor)HI Ms. Naylor, thank you for the reply. I will check the Selective service information. But these classifications were for men already in service and overseas for several years. Would the same system apply after enlistment? Thanks, joan

1 person found this helpfulDear Ms. Stachnik,
Thank you for posting your follow-up request on History Hub!
We searched available resources that may be relevant to your inquiry. You can find lists of classifications used by Selective Service boards here. Also, you might be interested in an article about the History of Military Testing and a summary of Enlistment Eligibility.
In addition, we would suggest reviewing a paper titled “Education, Classification, and Military Strength: A look at the Development of the U. S. Army During World War II” as well as a book titled “United States Army in World War II - Special Studies: The Employment of Negro Troops” by Ulysses Lee, in particular Chapter IX “Units: Men and Training” available at the U.S. Army Center of Military History website.
Further, a publication titled “Marginal Man and Military History” might contain some information of interest to you.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
