Dear Mr. Adkins,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Population Schedules for the 1880, and 1890 in the Records of the Bureau of the Census (Record Group 29). Digital images of the 1880 and 1890 census records are not available in the Catalog yet but are digitized and available on Ancestry. Therefore, we searched all of the 1800s censuses in Ancestry and located 169 hits for any data about Elijah Adkins.
Also, please review NARA’s website for background information and research tips on accessing Freedmen’s Bureau Records. The records have been microfilmed and have been digitized by fold3. A search of the African American Collection of fold3 produced numerous hits for a Elijah Adkins.
There may be a fee for using Ancestry or fold3. However, you may view these records online at one NARA's facilities for free via a NARA PC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at https://www.archives.gov/locations/. You also may find other research useful tips on African American Genealogy Resources.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
