You have any additional information pertaining to this individual. Full name, date of birth and year. There are people here that can check alternate sources such as ancestry.com or Fold3.com
Thanks,

Re: Looking for info regarding R.E. French
Jan Albertie Aug 23, 2019 11:02 AM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Good Morning Elliot,
All I have is his residence at time of enlistment was 5212 Mardel Ave, St. Louis, MO. He died in either 1944 or 1945. Don't have parent's names, his date of his birth or date of his death, or where he's buried. He began his military career as a Seabee then switched to Naval Combat Demolition Unit. I don't have a subscription to Ancestry or Fold3, if you do would you be so kind as to check for me? I contacted the realtor who is currently selling the address above, but she didn't have information going back to the 40's. I've also contacted the City Records Department for St. Louis, but have not heard back from them.
Thank you.
Regards,
Jan

joan stachnik Aug 23, 2019 12:20 PM (in response to Jan Albertie)1 person found this helpfulHI Jan, the National Archives has an online list of WWII casualties for Navy and Army by state. I searched through the Navy casualty list (as of 1946) for Missouri and did not find an RE French. There was one listing for a Marine, wounded, by the name of Richard E. Is this a family member you are searching for? Hope this is of some help. joan

1 person found this helpfulDear Ms. Albertie,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
To seek records of a WWII veteran, please begin by requesting his Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF). OMPFs and medical records of enlisted men of the U.S. Navy who were separated from the service after 1885 and prior to 1955 are located at NARA’s National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. To request these records, please mail a completed SF-180 - National Archives to NPRC.
His burial information may be included in the casualty records. Navy casualty records from 1940-1989 are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL), P.O. Box 38757, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. For access to these records, please contact RL-SL via letter or email at stl.archives@nara.gov..
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Jan Albertie Aug 26, 2019 1:20 AM (in response to Lisha Penn)Thank you Lisha.
I completed the form and mailed it in. I also contacted the Construction Battalion data base to see if they have his first & middle names. He was a Seabee prior to becoming NCDU.
Best regards,

I also checked the Missouri State WW2 Casualties database that is available on NARA website. Checked WIA, KIA, DOW, and POWs database for and did not see any R.E French from the Navy. Only one I saw was a Richard F. French but he was in the Army. Hope this helps.

Very complex information here awesome that you found this R.E French looks like he was KIA in ETO, European Theatre of Operations. I found a Naval yearbook for the 4th USN Construction Battalion Special, it dose have R.E French with said address that you have listed in your earlier post. But the odd thing this unit was located in Japan, and Guadalcanal. Question was this man transfered during the war leaving the pacific and transfering into the European Theatre of Operations prior to him being KIA.
Thanks,
Elliot Schneider

Jan Albertie Aug 27, 2019 3:44 PM (in response to Jan Albertie)Hi Elliot,
In answer to your question, YES, I believe he was transferred to Operation Dragoon. I just can't dig up any confirmation. He left the Seabees and joined the Naval Combat Demolition Unit but I don't know where or when.
That's part of the reason I'm confused as well. I will greatfully accept any information you can dig up.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Jan

There is more than one veteran with the name Robert E. French.
The R. E. French that you found on FINDAGRAVE.com is not the correct party. He is Robert Eugene French, born in 1860 in England and died in DeSoto, Missouri (Jefferson County, Missouri) on February 20, 1944 at age 83. A man that age does not appear to match the photo in the source that you found the 5212 Mardel Ave. address in.
If you had looked further for other listings of "French" after the Mardel Ave. address, you would have found "Robert French, 226 Feltz St., Perryville, MO (Perry County Missouri). A search in other databases shows him to be Robert Emmanuel French (born August 30, 1904 in Perryville, MO and who died December 23, 1988 in Colorado Springs, CO (El Paso County Colorado). A son of Thaddeus Joseph French and Hulda French.
This is most likely to be the person you were looking for.
