Dear Ms. Munn,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the following series that may pertain to your great grandfather’s service. If he was an officer -- Records of Service of Officers, 1866-1867 and Abstracts of Service Records of Naval Officers, 5/1798 - 7/1924. If he was an enlisted man -- Lists of Recruits Enlisted for Service During the Civil War, 2/1864 - 6/1865 and Records Relating to Enlisted Men Who Served in the Navy Between 1842 and 1885. If he survived the War, he may be in these indexes -- Index to Certificates of Discharge Issued for Discharges Made During and Immediately After the Civil War (Part I) or Index to Certificates of Discharge Issued for Discharges Made During and Immediately After the Civil War (Part II). If he applied for a pension, he may be listed in the Registers of Pensions, 5/1867 - 8/1902. Additional information about him may be in the Civil War Muster Rolls, 5/1861 - 10/1863; Ship Books Containing Complements and Rosters of Officers on Vessels, 11/1834 - 9/1865; and Register of Petty Officers, Seamen and Others Received On Board Receiving Ships at the Naval Rendezvous at Baltimore, 1955 - 1869. All of these series are part of the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24).
We also located 3 series titled Case Files of Disapproved Pension Applications of Civil War and Later Navy Veterans, 1861 - 1910; Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Civil War and Later Navy Veterans, 1861 - 1910; or Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Widows and Other Dependents of Navy Veterans, 1861 - 1910 in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15).
Some of these records have been digitized and can be searched online via the Catalog. Otherwise for access to the records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at email@example.com.
We hope that this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
