I am trying to identify the tribe my gggrandmother was from. I have a rough idea of where she was from, but no records. I did find a birth certificate for her daughter which lists the daughter as “Indian and white” so I believe she was Native. She died in 1867 in Iowa. We do not know the names of her parents or any other relatives. She appears on a census in Canada in 1851.
Do I write to the tribes From where she possibly lived and ask them if she was a member? Is this the best way? I am not trying to pursue enrollment, I just want to solve a family puzzle.
Dear Ms. Andrews,
Thanks for posting your request on History Hub!
We recommend that you search the National Archives’ Native American Heritage for tips on how to determine the tribe that your great grandmother may have been a member of and to ascertain the records that might be useful to your research.
You can find additional research tips at Family Search’s website on American Indian Genealogy; and background information on Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
