Dear Ms. Peterson,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched Ancestry and located a Naturalization Card of a John Peterson that indicates he came by way of Buffalo, NY in July 1853 and was naturalized on April 24, 1877 at the Circuit Court in Stevens Point, WI. The Wisconsin Historical Society may have a microfilm copy of the Naturalization Record that this card refers to. If this information is correct, Buffalo was a popular entry point for many decades and a large percentage of individuals entering there from Canada were actually bound for the U.S. It will be difficult to locate any documentation about his arrival during this time period because manifests of passengers arriving from Canada did not come into consistent use until 1895.
We suggest that you review the National Archives’ website for immigration-related research tips, read this resource information about the history of Norwegians in the U.S., and search for his emigration from Norway to the United States or Canada using on these websites: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Norway_Emigration_and_Immigration; and
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
