3 people found this helpfulDear Ms. Finn,
Thanks for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you should begin your genealogical research by working backward through your grandfather Hugh’s life with the hope that a record from his time in the United States may provide a clue about his immigration and life in Scotland. For instance, where did he live in the U.S.? You may be able to locate his marriage and death records on Ancestry’s website at https://www.ancestry.com/search/categories/34/. Locating any marriage and vital records from their county/state of residence will be helpful.
You should also determine his citizenship status in the U.S. If he became a U.S. citizen, the documentation for that process could provide some of his immigration details. This listing of Federal courts and associated NARA offices will help in tracking down any naturalization records: www.archives.gov/research/court-records based on where he may have lived.
We also suggest that you search NARA website Census Resources for tips on how to access census records that may are digitized in the National Archives Catalog or available on our partners’ websites and how view them for free at a NARA facility. NARA has census schedules on microfilm dating from 1790 to 1930 but data from recent censuses are not available after 1940 due to the 72-year restriction on access to the Census. Most researchers find it helpful to begin with the 1940 Census and work backwards to locate people in earlier generations.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!

Henry Rosenberg Aug 12, 2019 2:34 PM (in response to Lisha Penn)Also, I have found that working around the primary person may help to give you pieces of the puzzle or at least confirm what you know. Check all of the people you know of, parents, adoptive parents, people he may have lived with. Censuses are helpful and may indicated immigration or naturalization dates. I like familysearch.org. It is free and sometimes has information that ancestry has.

Henry Rosenberg Aug 6, 2019 5:25 PM (in response to gabriele finn)This is the only one I could find. Not sure if this is him. I wasn't sure if the parental names were just birth parents and they remained in Scotland.

Familysearch.org requires registration but is free.
Let me know if this is him.I'm interested to know.

Henry Rosenberg Aug 12, 2019 12:28 PM (in response to gabriele finn)Hi Gabriele- Genealogy research is tough. Many times names are misspelled or family tales are wrong. If you definitely know this is not him, move on. I'm not sure where to check for Boston immigration. Also, keep in mind that people may have come back and forth.
Good luck,
Henry
