    Seeking Deck logs of LST-796

    keith styer Wayfarer

Looking for ship's log for an LST 796 during WWII. This ship was man by the Coast Guard so I'm not sure where to start. Any help would be appreciate!

          Dear Mr. Styer,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941 - 1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that include the deck logs of the LST-796 from 19 October 1944 through 17 April 1946.  For access to and/or copies of these records please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov. When you contact them, please be as specific as possible about which dates you need.

Under an agreement made between the Commandant and the Chief of Naval Operations, the Coast Guard supplied officers and crewmen for a number of LSTs, beginning in 1943. Even with Coast Guard crews all LSTs remained commissioned US Navy vessels. See this page about Coast Guard Manned LSTs. We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
