He is shown from burial record that he was with Co D. Mississippi Marine Brigade. Might be on the a hospital rolls if he was transferred their for injury related to the war.

Beverly Kerr Jul 18, 2019 11:38 AM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Thanks, that was a great idea. I'll try that route since he was buried in Vicksburg there shouldn't have been too many hospitals in that area at the time. I appreciate all suggestions.

2 people found this helpfulDear Ms. Kerr,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located series titled Record Books of Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Offices of the Confederate Government that may contain Mississippi unit information; Confederate Muster and Pay Rolls; and Carded Records Showing Service of Military Units in Confederate Organizations, 1903-1927 in the War Department Collection of Confederate Records (Record Group 109). We also located a series titled Correspondence and Circulars of the Office of the Commissioner for Locating and Marking Confederate Graves in the Records of the Office of the Quartermaster General (Record Group 92) that may include grave information for Private Painter. For access to and/or copies of these records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.
We also suggest that you contact the Mississippi Department of Archives & History.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Beverly Kerr Sep 27, 2019 12:10 AM (in response to Rebecca Collier)The National Archives was most helpful and sent me the hospital records of the times Painter was ill. It listed his death as typhoid fever. I so appreciate all your helpful suggestions as I truly wanted to know this last bit of information. Now, on with the book!
