We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the following series that may pertain to your father’s prison records:
1) the series Warden's Notebook Pages, 1934-1963 and 2) Prisoner Identification Photographs, 1934-1963; both of these series are in the Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129) for United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island, CA. For access and/or copies of records in these series, please contact the National Archives at San Francisco (RW-SB) via email at sanbruno.archives@nara.gov.
3) the series Inmate Index Cards, 1930-1981 in the Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129) for United States Penitentiary, McNeil Island, WA; for access and/or copies of records in these series, please contact the National Archives at Seattle (RW-SE) via email at seattle.archives@nara.gov.
4) the series Index to Prisoners, 1902-1973 in the Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129) for United States Penitentiary, Atlanta, GA; for access and/or copies of records in these series, please contact the National Archives at Atlanta (RE-AT) via email at atlanta.archives@nara.gov.
5) the series Criminal Investigation Files, 1965-1998 in the Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129) for United States Penitentiary, Marion, IL
6) the series Photographs Relating to Prison Activities, 1936 - 5/15/1971 in the Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129) for United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth, KS; for access and/or copies of records in series 5 and 6, please contact the National Archives at Kansas City (RM-KC) via email at kansascity.archives@nara.gov.

If I "think" I know the prison - CHINO - do these items you provided help me? I just googled CHINO and If I read it correctly it is a state prison not federal.

“CHINO” refers to the California Institution for Men in Chino, CA. California prison records for 1850 through 1979 are in the custody of the California State Archives. See their Contact Information page for their mailing address, phone number and email address.We hope this information is helpful.
