Looking for 2 Reports about Iowa River

    Elizabeth Fouts Newbie

      I am looking for:

      A) Does anyone have a copy of the the report entitled “Fresh Water Mussels of the Iowa River” by Frank A. Stromsten and Otto Fredrick Kampmeier that was submitted to the Bureau of Fisheries, U. S. Department of Commerce and Labor in 1908?

      B) Does anyone have a copy of any field notes that Frank A. Stromsten and Otto Fredrick Kampmeier may have taken while they were conducting the 1908 field survey of the Iowa River? Their survey began in the early summer at the Iowa River headwaters and concluded in the fall at the confluence of the Iowa River and the Mississippi.

          Dear Ms. Fouts,

We heard that you contacted the National Archives at College - Textual Reference (RDT2) and they provided you a response. We hope you were able to locate the information you were seeking.

Yes, we contacted the National Archives and No they were not able to locate the information that we are seeking. The following was done:

              ·         Searched finding aids to Publications of the United States Government (Record Group 287) for references to the report in published form but was unsuccessful in locating anything

              ·         The records of the Bureau of Fisheries among records of the Fish and Wildlife Service (Record Group 22) do not include any separate records on mussels in the Iowa River.

              ·         The "General Correspondence, 1880-1935" in records of the bureau's Division of Scientific Inquiry include files concerning mussels investigations associated with the Fairport (Iowa) Mussels Culture station but the earliest date is 1921.

              ·         Records Relating to Fish Culture Stations, 1875-1934" include a file entitled "Fairport (Iowa)-Preliminary Investigations and Selection of Site, 1908-1909.

              ·         Records Relating to Disposition of Scientific Collections, 1901-1928" but found nothing on Iowa.

Our research is unable to locate a citation for this report, so we are thinking that it may be an unpublished report. The report may also be contained within Iowa Fish Commissioner George U. Bowers papers, as he was listed as the person who received the mussel report (The Iowa Alumnus dated October 15, 1908).

The Smithsonian has some of Stromsten and Kampmeier's specimens from this survey (we have a copy of the United States Bureau of Fisheries Mussel accession books, circa 1899-1912's) listing the S & K number.
