Dear Mr. Vogel,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Beginning in 1850, place of birth was recorded in the decennial census. The statistical data was published following each census and there are sections specific to foreign birth, but were unable to locate data specific to certain nationalities.
Three books have been written about Germans in Texas that could be useful to read:
- History of German Settlements in Texas, by Rudolph Leopold Biesele; German-Texan Heritage Society, San Marcos, 1930.
- German Texana, by Gilbert J. Jordan; Eakin, Burnet, Texas, 1980.
- German Culture in Texas, by Glenn Lich and Dona Reeves; Twayne, Boston, 1981.
Another suggestion is to search within the census records themselves utilizing “Germany” as birthplace and “Texas” as the lived in location. Also, the German-Texan Heritage Society may have other resources useful to you.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
