    Seeking Index to Census Records

    Dianne Holley Newbie

Is there an index to the filmed NARA census records located at Archive.org that shows which counties in which states are on which numbered reels? I have found that the films at Archive.org are usually more readable that what I get other places, but walking through finding a specific record is VERY time consuming with no index. Thanks!

          Dear Ms. Holley,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

Before the census records were digitized, researchers relied on the SOUNDEX indexes that were available. To retrieve these lists, please go to https://www.archives.gov/research, look for the “Other Online Research Tools” box, and click on Microfilm Publication. In the “Search & Browse NARA's Microfilm Catalog” area, click on  “Advanced Search.” In the Publication Title area, type *Index* and in the Record Group Number area, type 29. Click on the Search button on the far right-hand side. The results should be 242 records. Click on the title for the year and the state you are interested in. The click on the “View Important Publication Details” under the Publication Details section. A pdf of the roll listing (beginning with T or M) should pop up on the bottom of your computer page. Click on it for a roll listing. Use the back arrow to get back to the index page and begin again for another census year and/or state.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
