Re: Seeking individual Social Security records
Terri Oguz Jun 4, 2019 10:16 AM (in response to Jerry Carbone)1 person found this helpfulSocial Security does have employment history data on individuals, however, this information is subject to privacy statutes, which means it can only be released to 3rd parties with written authorization from the subject, or alternatively, if the person is deceased, to a relative of the subject, upon proof of death, i.e. a death certificate and proof of the relationship to the subject is required. You're request doesn't indicate your relationship status to this individual, however, unless you can prove he/she is deceased and your relationship, you won't be able to obtain his/her employment record from SSA.
As an aside, The Social Security death index doesn't include everyone whose died, just those whose deaths that have been reported to the Social Security Administration, usually for benefit purposes. For more information see: https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v64n1/v64n1p45.pdf .

Thank you for your reply. I am not related to the individual but representing a client who is seeking the information. Because the subject of our search disappeared in 1939 with no trace, we do not have a death record. I am assuming that the SSA would grant that a man who was in his fifties in 1939 would certainly not be alive today. We can prove his birth date and blood relationship to my client.
I am sorry that I did not reply sooner to your response.

3 people found this helpfulDear Mr. Carbone,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located data files titled Summary of Social Security Earnings File, 1937 - 1977 from the series Longitudinal Retirement History Study Files, 1969 - 1979 in the Records of the Social Security Administration (Record Group 47). You may download the files. For any questions about the datafile, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Electronic Records (RDE) via email at cer@nara.gov.
The Social Security Administration (SAA) maintains a Master Earnings File and the Social Security Files of Individuals. For questions about and access to these files, please contact the SSA.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
