We searched the National Archives Catalog and located series titled Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels and Airplanes Departing from New York, New York, 7/1/1948 - 12/31/1956 and Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 6/16/1897 - 7/3/1957 in the Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1787-2004 (Record Group 85). For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.
Both of these series listed above have information about Emil Fries and have been digitized by ancestry.com. Additional information that was located on ancestry.com -- UK Incoming Passenger List; UK Outward Passenger List; and the SS Media vessel. You may view these records online at one NARA's facilities for free via ALIC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at http://www.archives.gov/locations/.
Using these records we ascertained that Emil and his family departed from New York on July 9, 1948 aboard the SS Media. They arrived in Liverpool on July 17, 1948, and departed for the U.S. on September 18, 1948 aboard the SS Media. They arrived back in New York on September 25, 1948.
