    X Marks What?

    Angela Wilson Newbie

In the 1860 Clarke Co. Mississippi census, some people have an X under Race and the rest are blank?

          Dear Ms. Wilson,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

There were two 1860 Census for Mississippi -- one for free and one for slave inhabitants. Even though census had an “x” in the Race column, the count is provided at the bottom of the page. We were unable to determine the reason for the “X”. We suggest that you contact the National Archives at Washington, DC (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov. They may have an explanation.

There are also resources available that explain the Census such as Clues in Census Records, 1850-1930, Other Resources, and the 1860 Instructions.

We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
