2 people found this helpfulDear Mr. Hemingway,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the series World War II Operations Reports, 1940 - 1948 in the Records of the Adjutant General’s Office, 1905-1981 (Record Group 407) and located histories for 9 July 1944 to 11 May 1945 and 1 July - 31 December 1944; and after action reports for 13 July 1944 to 8 May 1945 of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division (ID). We were unable to locate specific records of the 2nd Battalion. Records of lower echelon units sometimes were incorporated into the files of the regiment.
We also located 92 file units of the 5th ID in the series titled Unit Histories, 1943 - 1967 in the Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter), 1917-1999 (Record Group 338). For access to and/or copies of the files in RG 407 and RG 338, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Re: Seeking WWII records for 2nd Infantry Regiment, 5th ID
John Hemingway May 16, 2019 10:24 PM (in response to Rebecca Collier)I want to follow up on my earlier thanks to say that the folks at the National Archives were able to provide everything from Division and Regiment ops and after action reports to map overlays and -- most special of all for the family on whose behalf I'm doing this research -- a copy of the Division general orders in which their two twin brothers were each posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
So thank you very much once again for a response that proved very helpful indeed!
