Thank you for posting you request to History Hub!
The National Archives does not keep records concerning vehicle registrations or the issuance of license plates. If the records still exist, they would be in the possession of the issuing state or territory. We searched online and were unable to find a source that provides comprehensive information about the availability of motor vehicle registration and licencing records for each state. We did find a couple of collections for specific states available online, such as Oregon, Motor Vehicle Registrations, 1911-1946 and California Automobile Registration (1921).
We recommend that you contact the department of motor vehicles and the state archives of the state which you are researching for questions about the availability of motor vehicle records. We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
