Dear Mr. Campbell,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the Armed Forces Explosives Safety Board Explosion Reports, 1928 - 1947 in Records of Interservice Agencies (Record Group 334) and located a file unit titled Guadalcanal, Lunga Point, BSI - 29 January 1945. For access to or copies of this file unit, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We also searched the Court of Inquiry Proceedings, 1909 - 1971 and the Records of Select Courts of Inquiry, 5/18/1932 - 6/1953 in the Records of the Office of the Judge Advocate General (Navy) (Record Group 125 but were unable to locate file units pertaining to the USS Serpens (AK-97) or Guadalcanal, Lunga Point.
It is possible that any Courts of Inquiry about the explosion may be still in the custody of the Navy. We suggest that you contact the Operational Archives Branch, Naval History & Heritage Command, 805 Kidder Breese Street, SE, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC 20374-5060.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
