He may have been issued two bronze service stars for his war ribbon, for ETO, SWPTO. This is sometimes confusing, because its different than an actual bronze medal.

The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis holds the military personnel records for service members. You can fill the SF 180 form to request using the following below. Might be beneficial. Little advice tell them you are requesting his Complete Official Personnel Military File (OMPF), not just discharge papers.
- Mail a letter or Standard Form (SF) 180, Request Pertaining to Military Records to:National Personnel Records Center 1 Archives Drive St. Louis, MO 63138
- Fax a letter or Standard Form 180 to: 314-801-9195

Please follow this link, copy and paste into your web browser. Some great information on your fathers company and others as well. The 655th was attached to the 9th Army.
Thanks,
Elliot

1 person found this helpfulDear Mr. DeMay,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the World War II Operations Reports, 1940 - 1948 in the Records of the Adjutant General’s Office, 1905-1981 (Record Group 407) and located a history for 17 December 1943 to 6 October 1945, operation reports for 8 May 1945 to November 1946, and general orders for 1943-1944 of the 655th Topographical Engineer Battalion. Explanations of the 2 Bronze Stars may be included. We also checked the listings for Unit Citations but the 655th was not included. For access to and/or copies of these files, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
