Re: USNS Gen. William O. Darby Jr. ships logs.
James Strickland Dec 10, 2018 8:53 AM (in response to James Strickland)Where your aboard for the crossing? The first couple days were calm then we hit a mid-Atlantic storm whiich lasted, as recall, about 4-5 days. We passed the SS America, going to New York, just after it calmed down. I wouldn't trade the experience of that trip for anything. My father had crossed in April 1944 on a troopship and now I had some knowledge of what it had been like for him.

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the Military Sea Transportation Service Deck Logs, 1/1/1953 - 12/31/1957 in RG 313 and located logs of the USNS General William O. Darby (T-AP-127) for January 1951 to December 1954 and February 1956 to December 1956. No logs for January 1956 were located.
If you are interested in access to or copies of the MSTS deck logs, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
We hope this information is helpful.

Re: USNS Gen. William O. Darby Jr. ships logs.
James Strickland Dec 11, 2018 11:22 AM (in response to Rebecca Collier)The crossing, inn January 1956 had been a very rough one. The Captain had announced that he had made many crossings and this was the worst one he has experienced. I thought it would interesting to share this experience with my grandkids. Is there any other source that I could check? Is there a reunion group of folks who sailed, as regulars, on these ships?
