    Antique rifle

am conducting  research and would like to know more about an inherited rifle that my wife has aquired. It is a Springfield model 1884 trap door. The serial number is 538663.  I have already concluded that it was produced between January and March 1892, based on several different online sources including history hub.

As an avid firearms and history enthusiest I am naturally curious to know more about how the rifle ended up on my in laws family farm. It obviously was a military issued arm first as it has an SWP (samuel peter) inspection stamp on the stock as well as other numerical stock engravings.

I read a post from someone with a similar rifle and they were given guidance to contact springfield and possibly the national park service or nation archives. Any similar information or guidance would be appreciated.
