    Naval Service Numbers

As I've been researching those who served with my father on the USS Zircon (PY-16) during World War II, I've come across a couple people who appear to have risen in the ranks from Seaman First Class to high ranking positions, such as Lieutenant.

Does a person's service number change at any time during a person's service period? I've noticed that enlisted men's service numbers (on muster rolls and other documents) are seven-digit numbers, but that officers' are five- and six-digit numbers.
