Dear Mr. Neergaard,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
The National Archives at Boston holds the historical records of the Springfield Armory. The series Reports Relating to Tests of Ordnance, Routine Work, and Other Matters, 1/1863 - 12/1908 may hold blueprints of the Springfield M1903 Rifle. Additionally, the following series may contain records providing additional information about the rifle:
- General Correspondence, 1900 - 1915
- Reports of Tests of Ordnance and Proceedings of Boards Making the Tests, 1864 - 1905
- Reports on Powder Tests, 3/1877 - 1908
- Weekly Reports of Arms Manufactured, Repaired, Issued and Ready for Issue, 1883 - 1904
For assistance with referencing these records, please contact the National Archives at Boston via email at email@example.com.
In additional, the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) has custody of the Infantry Board Reports, 1920 - 1941 in the Records of the Chiefs of Arms (Record Group 177) which contains several reports that include advances made to the M1903 rifle in 1923. For access to these records, please email RDT2 via firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
Thank you very much for this excellent lead. I'll be in Boston in a month and will plan a trip to the archives to research these materials further.
