looking for Henry Rifle issue information in Washington DC Civil War

    Kathy Bower Newbie

Generally speaking, during the American Civil War the US Government issued long guns other than Henry Repeaters.  Soldiers preferring to use these weapons purchased their own and subsequently the ammo as well.  However, during a particular time frame there were some issued in Washington DC area --- I believe in 1863.  Does anyone know the serial number spread of the issued Henrys and if so, how one might locate which Rifle (by serial number) was issued to which soldier??

          Dear Ms. Bower,

Thank you for contacting the History Hub.

Unfortunately, we are unable to locate any prepared lists showing the serial numbers of weapons purchased and issued by the United States Army.  If such lists were prepared by the Office of the Chief of Ordnance, they were not transferred to the National Archives with the older records of that office.

We are sorry not to be able to give you more information on this subject, but wish you the best of luck with your continued research.

          Best,
