Dear Mr. Hazeltine,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
To compile a listing of all the crew members of the USS Davis, you need to have access or acquire copies of the ship’s muster rolls/personnel diaries from March 1957 to 1982.
The National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) has custody of U.S. Navy muster rolls from 1939 to 1976. From March 1957 onwards, the personnel diaries (also known as muster rolls) include lists of officers in addition to the enlisted personnel. Muster rolls/personnel diaries do not contain current addresses of former naval personnel or their survivors. Muster rolls/Personnel Diaries from 1971 onward utilize social security numbers as service numbers and are subject to privacy restrictions. Those subject to privacy restrictions must be requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). For access to the muster rolls/personnel diaries for the USS Davis (DD-937) for 1957 to 1976, please contact RDT2 via email at email@example.com.
Navy personnel diaries/muster rolls after 1976 are in the custody of the Navy Personnel Command (PERS-00J6), 5720 Integrity Drive, Millington, TN 38055. These provide a listing of anyone who reported on-board each day, anyone who left, anyone who did not report, and anyone who reenlisted. They also include copies of the Officer Distribution Control Report (ODCR) and the Enlisted Distribution Verification Report (EDVR). Individuals are listed by name, rank/rate and social security number. Their email address is UASKNPC@navy.mil.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
