Re: 1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry 1st (Carter's), Confederate Tennessee Troops
Elliot Schneider Jul 3, 2018 4:38 PM (in response to Barbara Grossman)1 person found this helpfulHello Barbara,
You might want to check with the Tennessee State historical society. They have extensive books on the civil war regiment of Tennessee. Just moved from Knoxville, TN myself did allot of research while I was there. You may also know this but the state of Tennessee at the time of the civil war was torn apart of state was unionized and the other Confederate. This had torn may families apart. I quick did my search of alternate sources and did find a Timothy S. Keith who was a union soldier for the 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry but his name was Thomas S. Keith, not sure if related or not but worth a peek because there are allot of different variations in that first name he has. Maybe your source could help narrow it down by providing DOB. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Elliot Schneider

Re: 1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry 1st (Carter's), Confederate Tennessee Troops
Barbara Grossman Jul 3, 2018 8:42 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Hi, Elliot.
I also had found that Thomas S Keith and mentioned it to the person I've been trying to help. Didn't get a specific reply to that. There's also a Timothy Keith, born TN, circa 1834, who enlists in the Union Army in Washington Co., IL My friend's ancestor was supposedly born in 1837, per the 1850 US Census. The interesting thing is that her known Timothy is nowhere to be found, in or around Rhea County, in 1860, so . . . But even the Timothy Keith who enlists in IL seems to have no other presence there, either before or after the Civil War.
Another very compelling aspect of her Keith family's Civil War history is Jane Keith, member of the Rhea County Spartans: https://www.americancivilwarforum.com/rhea-county-spartans-all-girl-cavalry-company-1284.html
There is are lists of Rhea County Confederate soldiers by regiment/company/battalion, etc. (not up on military hierarchy), and I don't find either John or Timothy Keith on those lists (http://genealogytrails.com/tenn/rhea/rheameigs.html ).
So Union is seeming like more of a possibility, although I have found nothing definitive along those lines, either.
Thanks for your help.

Found a union hospital paper showing being injured and death during service for a John Keith but he was attached to the Massachusetts 6th Regiment during the Civil War and not Tennessee.

I found this one as well for a John Keith who registered and shows he was born in Tennessee. However the enlistment rolls show his last name as Keeth. I'm sure back than they did not know the correct spelling unless enlisted told them the correct spelling of their name. The interesting part of this when you look at the rolls it shows that he deserted. I'm just going to through this out there do you think it is possible that he deserted moved to another state, than re-enlisted as John Keith. This is like a puzzle.

I found this too that says he was born in Tennessee, but enlisted at 20 years old in Brainbridge, Illinois. Interesting it also shows he was Married as well. Do you know if your friend has information on any spouses or marriages. Usually you can try searching women's name and they might show up as widower, and invalid pensions. I'm going to put another theory out there, is it possible he enlisted in Tennessee in 1862 as stated from document above than in the process of desertion he moved with relative who lived in Illinois got married and re-enlisted under John Keith instead of said John Keeth from document above. So many different avenues.

Does your family friend know of any Nicholas Keith from Rhea County, Tennessee found paper work showing he filled a claim for his farm being utilized by the Army during the Civil War. Can you help verify if this is her Family or not.

Re: 1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry 1st (Carter's), Confederate Tennessee Troops
Barbara Grossman Jul 6, 2018 9:29 AM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Yes: Nicholas Wiley or Wiley Nicholas, father of Timothy S and John H Keith (and many other children by three wives).
Indeed, so many theories to pursue. I think I also had found one card (Confederate) for a Keith, no given name cited, who had deserted in May 1862 and returned that June.
