    Re: Fort Sheridan Library

    Elliot Schneider Scout

      Hello NARA,

Dose anyone know who, what, where, the contents of the Fort Sheridan Library went?. When the 5th Army left Fort Sheridan to move the unit to Fort Sam Houston where did all those library records go. Recently reached out to the 5th Army at Fort Sam Houstons Library Archivist and they tell me that at the time of the units move those records in that library never came to Fort Sam Houston.  The only records they currently have are from the 1990 to present when the organizational unit left Illinois for Texsas. The archivist told me she wish she knew what happened to all their records that they had housed at their library at Fort Sheridan before the move. Dose anyone know what happens to libraries on post when they are shut down.

      Thanks,

      Elliot Schneider

          Dear Mr. Schneider,

Thank you for posting your request to History Hub!

We searched the Records of the Army Staff (Record Group 319) and Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter) (Record Group 338) and located several accessions of records marked as Publication Record Sets that consist mainly of bulletins, regulations, circulars, memorandums, pamphlets, etc. of Fort Sheridan and/or the Fifth Army from 1965 to 1980. Without knowing the contents of the “library”, it is difficult to tell if these are the records you seek. None of them have been processed. If you would like to come in person to review these accessions, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.

The Army Records Officer may have records that indicate where the “library” was sent. We suggest you contact Anthony Crawley-Gibson, Army Records Officer, Army Records Management Division, 7701 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, VA 22315. The telephone number is 703-428-6464 and email is anthony.d.crawley-gibson.civ@mail.mil. If the “library” was sent to a FRC, please request the name of the facility, transfer numbers, and box numbers.

We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
