Re: I found a newsclipping from 1953 in El Paso that my uncle was awarded the Soldier's Medal. How can I find out what he did to earn that?

Thank you for posting your request to History Hub!
We searched the Records of Headquarters Army Ground Forces (Record Group 337) for records of Fort Bliss but were unable to locate general orders for 1953. The general orders you seek are most likely part of the records of his unit.
The National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) has custody of the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917- (Record Group 407) and the Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter) (Record Group 338). Military unit files among these records consist mostly of historical reports, after action reports, unit journals, and general orders. Because the files are arranged hierarchically, identification of the specific unit (i.e., division, regiment, and battalion) and date of interest are necessary before a search can be conducted. We do not have a name index to these records.
Please provide us with this information and we will gladly continue our search.

Thank you for posting your follow up request to History Hub!
We searched the various general order files for the 82nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapon Battalion, the 2nd Infantry Division, and the Eighth Army in the Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter) (Record Group 338) but were able to locate a general order for PFC Joseph Inshetski awarding him the Soldier’s Medal in either 1952 or 1953.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Michael Tomko Apr 24, 2018 12:13 PM (in response to Sheree Nguyen)The Korean War Project has the NARA Data base for the Valor Awards of the 8th Army and Divisions during the Korean War. The Data Base is at the Top Left side. The 82nd Anti Aircraft BN was attached to the 23rd Regimental Combat Team , 2nd INF Div. It may have been attached to other units and divisions during various periods. The Anti Aircraft Units were used as ground artillery. The site also has After Action Reports. There is also the Anti Aircraft Journal, which is listed at FT Sill, which describes how the anti aircraft units were deployed and utilized in Korea.
It also lists some of the awards. Some of the award data bases, such as the 2nd ID are searchable, whereas the
8th Army and 7th ID are listed in groups by years and tend to focus on the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
