Looking for birth or immigration record for ancestor who indicates born in New York City in 1876 or 1879, parents born in Italy.

He indicates in census responses (1910-1940 census records) he was born in New York City, parents born in Italy. I can't find anyone who would match him in 1880 census or in NYC birth records or immigration/naturalization records. 1890 census records destroyed in fire, so no help there. He only shows up in 1910-1940 census records, and death records in mid-1940s. In his WWI and WWII draft registration cards, he also indicates birth in New York City but gives different birth day/month/years for each registration. And to complicate things, he also spells his last name differently. Any suggestions?

          Dear Ms. Gray,

Thank you for contacting the History Hub!

We suggest that you begin with what you know for certain. Have you tried the 1900 census yet? Census records are compiled by the Census Takers who went door-to-door and asked the inhabitants of a household various questions. The responses depended on who was responding and if they were cooperative. Names were misspelled and dates of birth might be jumbled.

Draft cards were often filled out by clerk or handwritten by the draftee or a friend who can read and write. Again, names and dates of birth get mixed up.

Without specifics, it is difficult to provide additional assistance.

We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
