1 person found this helpfulThank you for contacting History Hub!
The New York City Municipal Archives http://home2.nyc.gov/html/records/html/archives/collections.shtmlholds records of the city, including death records, NYC police records and records of the Coroners and Chief Medical Examiner. You might want to contact them for a search of their records. Also, you could check newspaper databases for articles related to the incident. Two good New York newspaper archives are the New York Times and Brooklyn Daily Eagle. -

I found two news from the year 1900, but they are about some kind of shipwreck. Do you need them?

Nicholas Payne Nov 21, 2017 7:04 AM (in response to Merja Siljamäki)Hi Merja, thanks for your response and sorry for the delay but I have been away for a few days. I have seen the newspaper reports of the rescue of people from the 'Nonpareil' in 1900 by the crew of the 'Glengoil' the ship that my ancestor was on. They took them to New York where the Glengoil docked but left again a few weeks later. I presume he was on the ship when it left but I cannot find any further reports of shipping movements in the NY newspapers after that time. I suppose it's possible he jumped ship in NY but I have no evidence for that. More likely I think is that he came back to the UK but returned in 1901. Family lore has it that his body was found in a river in NY some weeks after he was last seen alive. The probate judge in the UK wrote that he was found 'at the foot of 87th street' but that seems to cross NY and links both rivers. Perhaps 'at the foot of' means a particular location in NY?

Martin Griffiths Mar 3, 2019 1:50 AM (in response to Nicholas Payne)Hello Nicholas ... William Newton Thirlaway is also my great great grandfather on my mum’s side. Her grandmother was his daughter. I have also been interested in his life as a master mariner and his death in New York
.I have a newspaper article which criticizes his navigational skills in a collision at sea and I thought this may have something to do with his early death. Do you have any more information or a photo of him? I could share my info on him. Best wishes from Martin Griffiths,

Nicholas Payne Mar 7, 2019 5:59 PM (in response to Martin Griffiths)Hi Martin, WNT was my maternal grandmother's father so we must be cousins of some sort.
The incident you refer to may have had some influence, as far as I can see there is no way of knowing. You may know that a little earlier in his career he was involved in a rescue of a ship's crew, the 'Non Pareil', so his career was, at least, eventful!
I have some information about him but sadly no photograph.
I have discovered one other Thirlaway relative who lives in Sri Lanka, perhaps you know of him?I'm not happy to put contact details on this site and can find no private message system on here, is there some other way to make contact?

Nicholas & Martin, if you both 'follow' each other, it should be possible to send a private message between your accounts. (Hover your mouse over the other's profile picture and a pop-up should appear with the 'follow' button.)
