Looking for 1890 passengers lists from Norway

Looking for emigrant passengers from, Norway, Spring of 1890. My great-grandparents met and possibly married on the ship. Edward Johannessen (sp?),from Trondheim and Anna Johnson from Oslo, who settled in Minnesota. Last names maybe versions of Johannessen but changed to Johnson when they got to the US. I have found them in US 1900 census. I am trying to do family research back to Norway.  Edward bd 7/11/1863; Anna bd 8/8/1864. I don't know how to proceed so I thought the next step would be to find the ship they were on. Can anyone help me?

  • Dear Ms. Theel,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Passenger Lists, 1817 - 1897 (Microfilm Publication M237) of vessels arriving at the Port of New York in the Records of the U.S. Customs Service (Record Group 36) that may include the lists of SS Eider with an Edward Johannessen aboard (4/24/1888) and SS P Caland (7/281888); and SS Bothnia with an Anna Johnson aboard (5/5/1890). We were unable to locate any passenger lists with them traveling to the United States in 1890 aboard the same ship. For more information about these records, please contact the National Archives at New York City (RRFN) at newyork.archives@nara.gov.

Microfilm Publication M237 has been digitized and made available online by Ancestry and FamilySearch. There may be a fee for using Ancestry. Instead, please check for access at your local library as many library systems subscribe to these sites, making them free for their patrons.

We suggest that you contact the Minnesota Department of Health to request a search for the marriage or death certificate. You may wish to note any name variants or broaden your search for the surrounding years. In addition, the FamilySearch research wiki for Minnesota Vital Records may be helpful.

Lastly, for information about Norwegian records, we suggest that you contact the National Archives of Norway for any genealogical and/or ship’s departure records pertaining to Edward Johannessen and Anna Johnson.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
